What is a proxy?

A proxy is a computer or software that works as an intermediary between a local network, for example your computer with a larger network, such as the internet. You could say the proxy works as a separator between users and websites that you browse. Proxies provide various functionalities, security and privacy depending on your needs.

If you use a proxy, internet traffic will visit the website address that you enter into the address bar through the proxy server. Your request will return through the same proxy server and then the proxy server will forward the data received from the website to you.

The proxy server works by intercepting the connection between the sender and receiver. All incoming data enters through one port and is forwarded to the entire network through another port. By blocking direct access between two networks, the proxy server makes it far more difficult for hackers to get internal addresses and private network details.

Some proxy servers are a group of applications or servers that block general internet services. For example, HTTP proxies bypass web access, and SMTP proxies bypass email. The proxy server uses a network addressing scheme to present one organization's IP address to the internet. The server submits all user requests to the internet and returns responses to the appropriate users. In addition to restricting access from outside, this mechanism can prevent users from reaching certain internet resources (e.g. certain websites). Proxy servers can also be a firewall component.

Every computer that uses the internet requires an IP address or IP address. The IP address can be likened to your computer's street name. If the post office needs to send something to your home, they need to know the name of the street where you live. The concept of IP addresses is also the same. The internet needs to know your IP Address so they send the right data to the right computer.

Basically, a proxy is a computer with internet that has their own IP address but is known by your computer. When you send a website request, your request is to enter the proxy server first. From there, the proxy server will make a request, take a response from the website server, and deliver it to your browser.
